What do bed bugs look like?

Adult bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small but noticeable, usually measuring about 1/5 of an inch long. They’re shaped like an apple seed and have a reddish-brown color. While they’re flat and small, you can usually spot them if you uncover their hiding spots. They grow darker and plumper after a blood meal.

Younger bed bugs, called nymphs, are even smaller—around 1/16 of an inch—and appear translucent or pale yellow. As they feed and grow, they darken and take on that classic rusty tone.

Bed bug eggs are about the size of a pinhead. These tiny, white, sticky eggs tend to blend in easily with fabric and wood surfaces, making them hard to spot unless you’re looking closely.

  • Bed bug infestations are not confined to beds - these pests can sneak into all kinds of unexpected places.
  • Bed bugs can go months without feeding, but when they do feed, they usually feed for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Are bed bugs harmful?

The good news is that bed bugs aren’t known to transmit disease. However, that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. These biting pests can cause a range of issues, such as:

  • Itchy bites that may lead to secondary skin infections from scratching.
  • Sleep disruption—they feed at night, which can lead to fatigue and stress.
  • Anemia, in rare cases, if the infestation is large and persistent.
  • Emotional strain, especially for families with children who may feel anxious or embarrassed.

The sooner you address a bed bug issue, the easier (and less expensive) it is to resolve.

Do bed bugs only live in beds?

No. Despite the name, bed bugs are not bed-exclusive. While they do love mattresses, box springs, and headboards, they can hide out in many other places. Bed bugs are hitchhikers and can show up just about anywhere, including:

  • Public transportation (buses, trains, planes)
  • Libraries and schools
  • Hospitals and nursing homes
  • Daycares
  • Office buildings
  • Movie theaters
  • Hotel rooms and waiting rooms

Basically, anywhere people gather and sit for a while can be a potential hotspot.

Where do bed bugs hide?

When they sneak into homes here in Pennsylvania, bed bugs search for tight, hidden spaces near their hosts. Some of their favorite hiding places include:

  • Cracks in furniture and baseboards
  • Behind electrical outlets and picture frames
  • Inside clocks, books, and electronics
  • Under the edges of carpets
  • Inside couches, recliners, or even piano benches
  • Luggage, backpacks, and sleeping bags

While beds are a common hideout, limiting your treatment to just the mattress is rarely enough.

How can I tell if I have bed bugs?

There are a few signs to watch for:

  • Live bed bugs (adults or nymphs)
  • Tiny white eggs or shed skins
  • Dark spots on fabric—these may be fecal stains
  • Reddish-brown smears from crushed bugs or droppings
  • A musty odor, especially with larger infestations

Check mattress seams, bedding, and nearby furniture. If you spot signs, don’t wait to take action.

How can I avoid bed bugs while traveling?

Bed bugs are notorious for hitching rides during vacations and business trips. Here’s how to avoid bringing them home:

  • Inspect hotel beds and furniture for stains or bugs.
  • Keep laundry in sealed plastic bags during your stay.
  • Use luggage racks to keep your bags off the floor.
  • Unpack directly into the washing machine when you return home.

These simple steps can help you sidestep a stressful infestation.
